1. SYDNEY’S TOP 10

'Touch to receive the books'
Sydney is blessed with stunning ocean beaches, magnificent national parks
and a wonderful subtropical climate that makes the great outdoors irresistible
to its four million inhabitants. The Eora people, the Aborigines who settled
around Sydney Harbour, arrived approximately 50,000 years ago, while the
earliest white settlers arrived in 1788. Free settlers soon followed in the wake
of the First Fleet of transported convicts, and after them several waves of
migrants seeking a new life. Now, over two centuries later, the once far-flung
penal colony has matured into a culturally diverse, tolerant and mesmerising
city. Ideally located on the world’s most beautiful harbour, Sydney is
as exciting and bustling as it is laid back and relaxing.
2. ST PETERSBURG

In just over 300 years St Petersburg has
had many faces. Peter the Great’s folly,
built on a swamp and intended to turn
Russia’s face towards the West, soon
became a magnificent city reflect ing
the majesty of the Russian Empire. Then
it was the “Cradle of the Revolution”, where
Lenin came to power. During World War II
it was a symbol of national pride. Today it is
Russia’s cul tural capital, with a wonderfully
preserved heritage and an inter national
arts pro gramme. Taken together, the first
three itineraries detailed below show the
influences that shaped the city: imperial,
Russian and Soviet. The others walk you
through the city with a much more mixed
offering. There is a day tour, a two-day tour,
a three-day tour and a five-day tour. Follow
the one that appeals to you, or simply dip
in and out and be inspired.

In Stockholm you are never far from water,
and the city’s 14 islands offer a beguiling mix
of culture and nature. Although beautiful
when seen from the water, this city is also a
pleasure to explore on foot, particularly
around Gamla Stan’s medieval lanes and the
leafy island of Djurgårgen. To help you make
the most of your visit, here are ideas for
four themed days out, followed by itineraries
based on length of stay on pages 10–11.
All the sights are accessible using public
transport. Prices include travel, food and
admission charges. Family prices are for
two adults and two children.

The following itineraries have been
designed to see the best of Switzerland
while keeping travel to a minimum. Firstly,
there are three two-day tours that take in
the country’s most significant cities: Zürich,
Bern and Geneva. These can be combined
to form a six-day tour, and additional
suggestions are made for those who
wish to extend their trip.
Next, come a three-day and a four-day
tour. The former is a short trip around
Italian-speaking Canton Ticino, the latter a
tour of predominantly French-speaking
Western Switzerland that starts (or finishes)
in Geneva. Lastly, a six-day itinerary focuses
on Switzerland’s best-known features:
its spectacular mountains and charming
historic towns.

Planning a one-day itinerary to take in
the best that Sydney has to offer need
not be a challenge. The magnificent
harbour or beaches, as well as cultural and
architectural highlights, would ideally be
included. These four itineraries offer a mix
of activities in different parts of Sydney,
all accessible by public transport. They are
designed to be flexible – you might choose
to leave out some stops or include other
attractions that are nearby. Prices show
the cost for two adults or for a family of
two adults and two children, including
food and drinks.

The following tours have been designed
to cover the best areas for experiencing
the many pleasures of Thailand while
keeping long-distance travel to a minimum.
The two-day tours introduce Thailand’s
main cities, Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
Next, a one-week tour north from Chiang
Mai introduces the rural and culturally
diverse highlands. The country’s rich
historical past is uncovered in a one-week
tour of the capitals of four kingdoms that
have flourished here, from the Sukhothai
kingdom in the north, founded in the
13th century, to the current Chakri dynasty,
which has ruled from Bangkok since 1782.
A one-week itinerary in the northeast covers
areas of both cultural interest and great
natural beauty. Of course, no trip to Thailand
is complete without sampling the country’s
superb beaches and islands. The final two
itineraries cover a week on the shores
of the Eastern Seaboard (a short trip from
Bangkok) and a week on the spectacular
beaches of Southern Thailand. Follow and
combine your favorite tours, or simply
seek inspiration.

introduces modern and ancient Bangkok.

The following tours have been designed to
take in as many of the region’s highlights as
possible, while keeping long-distance travel
to a minimum. The first tour covers two days
in Athens, with a trip to Salamína, one of the
picturesque Argo-Saronic Islands. This is
followed by a three-day tour in Rhodes,
and then a four-day tour in Crete, Greece’s
southernmost island. These itineraries can
be followed individually or combined to
form a longer city break-style tour. Next come
three island-hopping tours, covering the
Ionian Islands; the Sporades, Evvoia and the
Northeast Aegean Islands; and the Cyclades
and Dodecanese Islands. Extra suggestions are
provided for those who want to extend their
stay. Pick, combine and follow your favourite
tours, or simply dip in and out and be inspired.

'Touch to receive the books'
The following itineraries have been designed
to include as many of the country’s highlights
as possible, while keeping long-distance
travel manageable. First come three two-day
tours of the Netherlands’ most important
cities: Amsterdam, The Hague and Utrecht.
Visitors can combine these into a single sixday
tour by catching a train to the next city.
Next come four, seven-day tours. The first of
these covers the principal cities in the south,
while the second ventures further north to
the more rural province of Friesland
and the islands that lie just offshore.
The third suggested itinerary is a circular tour
beginning and ending in Amsterdam, which
takes in the quiet towns on the eastern side
of the country. The fourth tour is a linear
cycle route threading through the towns and
countryside along the River IJssel; this last
itinerary can also be followed by car. Pick,
combine and follow your favourite tours,
or simply dip in and out and be inspired.
