The Snowflake Man

Wilson Bentley really loved snow! When he was 15, he got a microscope for his birthday. He used it to look at snowflakes.

Bentley thought they were beautiful. He tried to draw them. However, they melted before he finished. So, he decided to take pictures of them.

In 1885, Bentley took the first picture of a snowflake. First, he connected a camera to a microscope. Next, he used a black board to collect falling snowflakes. With a toothpick, he separated one snowflake from the others. Then he took a picture of it.

Over the next 45 years, Bentley took more than 5,000 pictures of snowflakes. From these pictures, he made an important discovery. He found that every snowflake is different. Because of this, people call him “The Snowflake Man.”
